Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, what is it?
Many different people, including hypnotists, make all sorts of wild claims about hypnosis. Some allude to strange, maybe esoteric, powers of the hypnotist but my research suggests that hypnosis is not what you think it is! So, what exactly is it? Some say we experience hypnosis daily, which is partially but not exactly true, at least not in the context of what they mean! However, it is similar to something we experience daily, something we refer to as, trance states. These everyday trance states are usually quite light, mostly transient and completely involuntary. The daily trance states, perceived as being hypnotic, are similar to mild sleep states and occur quite naturally. But they are not exactly the same as the hypnotic state! During sleep, the neurological processes, that occur naturally, facilitate memory consolidation and reconsolidation, i.e. the forming or reforming of memories. This process leads to the creation of new long-term memories or updating existing ones, consequently, learning takes place.
Hypnosis, therapeutically speaking, is mostly voluntary, one can stay in it for an indefinite period, e.g. as determined by the type of therapy and/or the therapist. Also, under the guidance of a skilful hypnotist, it can reach depths that are mostly not possible during everyday trance states. Essentially, therapeutic hypnosis occurs when we are guided into these deeper sleep-like states (as in night-time sleep, theta/delta brainwaves). While we sleep that we experience various sleep states and this is where dreaming occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) and NonRem sleep. NonREM occurs in 3 phases, 1. (twilight) 2. (dream states) and 3. (delta/slow wave). NonREM 3 is slow-wave sleep and often called deep sleep. Because of time and space, this is a very brief description of this fascinating subject and one that may differ greatly from that of others in this field? Nevertheless, it is an opinion, based upon thousands of hours of research into the mechanisms of the brain and almost 20 years of clinical experience!
The most empowering effects of hypnosis most often occur in these deeper and slower states of brainwave activity. Nevertheless, any observable effect is ultimately caused by changes in the way our brain expresses sensory stimuli and/or memory-based responses. During hypnosis, the hypnotist guides the client into deeper states of trance, a state that effectively communicates directly with the brain. Primarily this occurs through conscious states and then slowly the client enters deeper states via nonconscious auditory processes. This is what some refer to as the inner or subconscious mind but all change occurs at a neurological level within the brain.
Hypnotherapy, Discover The Key To Your Own Succes
I believe there is some confusion over what hypnosis really is and this is because changes to life experience can occur in many different ways. For example, through prayer, meditation, NLP, CBT/psychotherapy or counselling or even during moments of consciousness or even will power)? In fact, a lot of the habits and behaviours we have, developed this way? So some interventions can clearly be seen as a consequence of being de-hypnotised! One could easily describe changes that occur by the above methods, as occurring in light or even non-trance states? However, with more serious conditions, perhaps those that developed over many years, I look at hypnosis slightly differently than most. Many psychological conditions are a consequence of things like early life trauma, cumulative trauma, neurological illness or malaise, even mental/emotional illness. I believe it is in these deeper, more specific neural states, that hypnosis occurs and it is particularly efficient in creating solutions!
Sight Our Most Powerful Sense Hypnosis Creates Vision
Life, it's all Perception
How we see things changes our perspective! Vision literally influences life, it is the most prolific stimulant of our emotions. It creates the mental imagery behind our thoughts! It is because vision stimulates and influences our emotions, thoughts and behaviours that hypnosis so effectively helps change mental imagery; leading to a better life! Hypnotherapy (the therapeutic intervention) occurs when the brain is in the realm of dreams, a consequence of theta and PGO brainwaves, as well as sleep spindles. This is the very stuff that our memories and behaviours are made of. And it is partly because more areas of the brain are related to vision than any other sense, that this dreamlike state makes hypnosis so effective.
Hypnosis, the vital link
Hypnotherapy thus creates a visual link to memory, even if you think you are not that visual! Think of it, everything you see, say and do is somehow dependent on memory! Our visual system is the most powerful, definitely the most active, of our senses, especially when it comes to memory. As an example of our visual imagination's power, (our mind's eye), the solution to Edison's electric bulb problem arose through a dream. The most iconic buildings ever built were first created in the mind of an architect! Visually speaking, you are no less qualified, maybe just a little less experienced!
