For more information on how stress affects us click here Stress: What causes it? Stress is as much a normal part of the human function as is breathing. If we did not have any stress we would not function PERIOD! When we experience normal stress it enhances the way we function, it boosts our immune system, helping us fight injury and disease. Many things stress our body, blood pressure puts stress on our heart. Tough manual tasks stress our system and so does mental and emotional strain. But what we are really talking about, is how You handle stress? Put two people in a stressful situation and you will probably get two different responses; WHY? Why indeed? The why is about how you respond to the stressors and that how determines your stress response. Once you know better, you can do better! More Details
So What happens when we get stressed? The stress response is what happens when we experience, or perceive, an impending sense of danger and it doesn't matter if it is real or imagined! The stress response is what helps us to either stand and fight or flee; the fight or flight response. But sometimes we can’t fight or run and other times we can; but it may be inappropriate. There are many things that can cause stress to be too prolonged and in these circumstances it can become chronic. Examples of things that can lead to chronic stress are: Stress of losing a loved one, sometimes including not grieving properly Bad relationships e.g. home, work and social lead to stress Stress associated with an abusive relationship, physical, mental, emotional Divorce (or it's equivalent in a civil partnership) can lead to excess stress Stress relating to family problems (even if relationships are good; we can still experience problems) Worry about or being retrenched - or unjustly dismissed can cause undue stress Being effectively unemployable because of your age (too young to retire; too old to hire) can be stressful Being in a job where you are unhappy or where there are poor working conditions Being unhappy at work and at home (no way out) can cause enormous stress Financial problems - this can include a spouse or partner being out of control financially (gambling, shopaholic etc.) Stressed!!! Anxiety or confidence issues can all lead to stress Low self esteem can be a symptom or cause of stress Exams or tests are known to raise stress Parental pessure leads to stress And many more besides
Too much stress can ruin your present life, or even a family's and the consequences can lead to even more stress. If we have too much stress over a long period we can be in a constant state of stress, or in a state of hyperarousal and the effects of this can be far reaching!
In modern society there seems to be a huge amount of pressure on us - and our children - to perform. This pressure can create negative (chronic) stress and is very often counter productive to good performance.
Too much stress affects our immune system and sometimes leads to an autoimmune response (where the body turns on itself), allergies or some types of eczema for example.
Chronic stress can also make us more susceptible to disease or infection, things such as: colds, flu and some digestive disorders. In its most extreme it can be a contributing factor in some serious medical conditions, Cardio vascular disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, strokes etc.
So What Can You Do? Stress affects every part of us; and those around us! But you can learn to manage your stress. Whilst you cannot always control what happens to you, you can learn to have control over how you respond to these internal and external stimuli. It is these learned control strategies that lessen the effects of stress. And like all learned behaviour the more you practice stress management the better you get at it.
