| Go on.... You Know you Want to Quit smoking!
Isn't Life really strange? Generally we wouldn't want to do something that's harmful to our health, or that of a loved one; I did say Generally!
If a stranger offered us a sweet and then told us it contained cyanide; for sure we wouldn't take it? Yet, rather ironically, Hydrogen Cyanide (what they use in the Gas Chamber) is one of over 4000 chemicals in a lighted cigarette!
We put our hand on a hot plate and get the message first time and will never knowingly do it again; at least under normal circumstances! Somehow we just know it's not a good idea to jump from a moving vehicle; no need to put that one to the test?
Yet, despite knowing and being repeatedly told, that smoking kills or causes unbearable suffering; we do not think twice about doing it? In fact we look forward to it and are willing to pay through the nose to do it! And, more often than not, that first cigarette is a horrible experience; I remember passing out on my first attempt! But we are persistent creatures and practice does make perfect! We even go as far as convincing ourself that it's actually OK because it helps us relax, makes us look cool or be part of the crowd etc. Peer pressure is one of the most cited reasons for starting smoking by clients who wish to quit!
Stranger Still: We willingly partake in a habit that will undoubtedly shorten our life and eventually kill us and we are willing to pay big time for the pleasure! You see the real price can be the loss of income as a consequence of a shorter life, or inability to work? So the actual cost of smoking may be much much higher than first thought? Now that is strange; is it not?
So why is this?
Then there is the denial part of us - "this only happens to other people." The part that allows us to feel we are immortal when we are young; but what do we know of death then anyway? But in a sense few of us ever really lose that "immortal self" theory! In reality, we smoke for subconscious reasons, that were probably determined long before we could legally smoke; maybe even before we were born? Subconsciously we believe that smoking is a good thing. Because humans like to be like other people, as well as being liked by them, we emulate the behaviour of people we wish to be like or be liked by. If you doubt that then ask your self this question - why do hairdressers love David Beckham? Answer, because every time he changes his hair style business goes up.
Think back to your first memory of wanting to smoke, which could be as young as 5 years old, or even younger, you remember that imaginary cigarette don't you; usually emulating someone you love or like? And in a world where fewer people seem to smoke (at least compared to 20 or 30 years ago) isn't it strange how many actors (on screen) seem to smoke these days? I often wonder if there is a correlation to the number of actors that smoke and the banning of cigarette advertising; but perhaps I am just being cynical?
So How Can I Stop? There are a number of ways, e.g: Will Power - Works for some
Now what do I mean by that - "works very well in the right circumstances?" This is a relatively factual statement; relative in that providing you are ready to quit, are doing it for the right reasons; that is usually PURELY FOR YOURSELF, have a good image of how this will positively change your life etc, then the chances of success are very good indeed. And of course you are on the higher side of Hypnotic susceptibility! If you are not on the higher side of Hypnotic susceptibility, it may require additional sessions (1 or 2) to increase your chances. Ultimately following the Consultation you should have a sense of confident expectation of success.
Will Hypnosis Work?
The degree to which you are able to experience Hypnosis will determine your level of success. The major component that will increase your chances of success is the work we do to prepare you for Hypnosis, what we call the pre-talk. Hypnosis will not make it impossible for you to smoke; it just makes it a lot easier to quit! It does this by communicating with the part of your mind that thinks smoking is the right, or a good, thing to do; remember the BUS?
The method of Hypnotherapy used varies according to which Therapist you see. Some favour the single session Method, and I believe for those who are highly susceptible to Hypnosis (or one of those in the higher range), Hypnosis will works very well for them. But remember, that is generally a very small proportion of the population. Others will try to tie you in to many sessions, in some cases 6 or 8 costing somewhere between $1200 and $2000; maybe more!
My own opinion is that the single session will possibly help fewer people becasue of the different way Hypnosis works on each individual. The 6 or 8 session method, I think, is rather like cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer; but may still work?
Which leads to the method I use; which is an empirically based methodology that I have used for several years now!
So, how do I do it?
After the Consultation I do 2 further sessions, both of approx. 2 hrs. duration. These sessions are tailored to your individual circumstances and designed to increase your chance of successfully quitting smoking. It also allows you to progressively improve your ability to experience Hypnosis which can have so many other valuable effects; deep relaxation for one!
This method allows you to experience Hypnosis in a tried and tested way. It will allow you to feel confident in your chances of success. It is a practical common sense based treatment. And that is so important because we need to make sense of everything we do; do we not?
The Consultation looks at how you think, how you make decisions, your personality and character type; all of which are important to you! So, what I do has to match your mode of living and thinking! If I'm not on your wave length you just won't get the message! But perhaps you will?
These days I see Hypnosis less in the sense of Mind over Matter, in fact I believe that the Mind over Matter model has more to do with you smoking in the first place, especially if you consciously want to quit; but can't?
I now see Hypnosis as a Matter of Mind! You see it is how you learn to use your Mind that, in the end, Matters? And I go to great lengths to prepare you so that YOU will get the best out of my Therapy.
However, there is a Butt!
Think of it logically! If smoking allows you to deal with these unresolved matters; your subconscious mind is less likely to allow you to stop the percieved medication; is it? And going back to what I said above; smoking is a survival issue? Because of that your subconscious mind will not allow any or all of the controversial information about smoking to interfere with the perceived benefits you get from it!
Smoking, or Nicotine to be precise, excites the pleasure pathways of your brain. In that sense it is a form of self-medicating and is well known to make people believe they derive satisfaction from it; despite all of the scientific evidence to the contrary! No matter what you think consciously, at the subconscious level you believe smoking is beneficial; otherwise you wouldn't do it!
If that is the case then essentially we need to work on resolving the unresolved issues. In a general sense these are not that difficult to uncover as there is generally a certain level of difficulty in your life, e.g. low self-esteem, lack of confidence, relationship issues, self-loathing, emotional sabotage etc.
Sometimes, just resolving these issues alone leads to cessation of the smoking habit!

No Therapist can guarantee you will quit. Many say they have success rates in excess of 90%. Which is great; providing they can prove it. The general rule now is, if you can't prove it; you can't say it - Makes sense really doesn't it?

Life is a strange Teacher Indeed!
The real reason we smoke is because at the unconscious level the immediate benefits outweigh the long term possible consequences. We further convince ourselves by saying, "I may get hit by a bus tomorrow," or something like that. But, rather ironically, that part of us that wants, maybe even needs, to smoke is the very same part that makes us avoid that bus; now isn't that strange? This backs up my theory that we see smoking as a survival issue, not a life or death issue; even though death is an issue! Survival is another matter and we are not talking about quality of life here; just survival!
Although there are no concrete figures to hand, it is believed that a small percentage of the general population are highly susceptible to Hypnosis, approx. 5% to 15% An even smaller percentage, for varying reasons, are deemed to not be Hypnotisable at all - approx 2% to 4%, The remainder of the general population are able to be Hypnotised to varying degrees somewhere between the above two extremes Hypnosis is an effective way to to stop smoking.
Firstly I conduct a FREE Consultation; during which I will introduce you to Hypnosis. If during that session the Hypnosis is ineffective, I will, more than likely, not recommend Hypnosis; or at least not with me. But this rarely happens, because most people have a relatively good ability to experience Hypnosis. And of course, before we do the Hypnosis I will use my 1000's of hours of experience to prepare you for being successful.
experientially, I believe there is a Caveat that may be a determining factor in your ability to achieve the success you want, at least for now! It is my opinion, and based on my experience, that if there is any unresolved mental, emotional or trauma based issues, these can be an impediment to success; but not always so!
